De beste prestatie van Chili op een WK is de derde plaats. Sinds die prestatie in 1962 was het Zuid-Amerikaanse land vier keer aanwezig op het mondiale podium, maar werd er geen wedstrijd meer gewonnen. Geen enkel ander land heeft een langere reeks (13) van WK-wedstrijden zonder zege. In 1998 bereikte Chili de achtste finales na drie remises in de groepsfase.
Chili eindigde op de tweede plaats in de Zuid-Amerikaanse WK-kwalificatiepoule na onder meer een thuiszege op Argentinië (16 oktober 2008, 1-0) en een 2-0 zege in Paraguay (7 juni 2009).
